Marshal Idriss Déby Itno was a Chadian military officer and a politician who was President of Chad republic from 1990 until his death in 2021. Idris was also head of the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement.
Idriss belong to the Bidyat clan of the Zaghawa ethnic group. He came into power by leading a rebellion against President Hissène Habré in December 1990 and he has survived various coup attempts and rebellions against his own rule. Idriss won elections in 1996 and 2001, and after term limits were eliminated he still won again in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021.
Idriss Déby was reported to have been killed in April 2021 while he was on the forefront commanding his forces against rebels from the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT).
