The political permutations ahead of the 2023 presidential election are reaching the critical stages as candidates in the major political parties get ready to slug it out for the presidential tickets.
In the camp of the ruling All Progressives Congress, the overwhelming sentiment appears to favour former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu. Tinubu is said to be the favourite because of his massive influence in the party.
More so, most of the APC party stalwarts believe that Tinubu deserves the presidential ticket more than anyone else because of the leading role he played in the formation of the party and how he gallantly led APC to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015.

But while there is not much doubt about Tinubu’s chances as an APC candidate, there have been a lot of uncertainties about who should emerge as his running mate. The major challenge however centres around religion. Some believe his running mate should be a Northern Christian to ensure balance and fairness. But some others have insisted that he should pick a Northern Muslim.
This report will highlight two major reasons why Tinubu might settle for a Northern Muslim.
He may lose the support of millions of core northern Muslim voters if he chooses a Christian running mate
Indeed, the overwhelming sentiment suggests that Tinubu’s running mate should be a Northern Christian, hence Tinubu is a Southern Muslim. But sentiments have no place in politics, rather it is a game of hard fact and firm reality.

With a Christian running, Tinubu has very little chance of winning the presidential election, because many of the core Northern state might turn their backs against him. At best, a Northern Christian can help him win four Northern states- Plateau, Benue, Taraba and Adamawa, and he will struggle in the other 15 Northern states.
A Northern Christian running mate cannot inspire Muslim Northern voters, who are in the majority to turn out en mass for Tinubu. So his best bet is to ignore sentiment and choose a northern Muslim as running mate.
It will counter PDP’s alleged plan to field a Northern Muslim as a Presidential candidate
Another important reason why Tinubu needs to choose a Northern Muslim as running mate is because it will help him counter PDP’s plan to field a Northern Muslim as presidential flagbearer.
There are strong speculations that the PDP may field a Northern Muslim candidate to harvest millions of core northern APC voters who might not want to vote for a southern candidate in 2023.

But by choosing a Northern Muslim as running mate, Tinubu may be able to convince those voters to change their minds and support APC.
