President John Pombe Magafuli has died from a heart condition on March 17, 2021. He was aged 61.
According to the Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan , he died after five years of authoritarian rule as well as his refusal to take Covid-19 issues critically.
There have been rumours from his detractors that the late President had contracted Covid-19 with respect to his sudden disappearance from the public.
Before his death, Magafuli had first been admitted to the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute on March 6, 2021 but was later on discharged according to a source.
However, Magafuli fell ill again and was rushed to Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital im Dar es Salaam on 14on March 14.
The VP, Samia announced that the country shall be in a state of mourning for a period of 14 days and the flags shall fly at hast mast, stating that funeral arrangements been planned.
Recall that the late President made his last public appearance on February 27.
John Magafuli whose nickname was "Bulldozer" was elected in 2015 as the President of Tanzania. He was an anti corruption crusader whose activities endeared criticisms from some people. He was re-elected in October 2020 in an election the opposition described as sham and involved rigging and other electoral voilence.
Magafuli was the Minister of Works, Transport and Communication from 2000 to 2005 , then, 2010 to 2015. He was made the chairman of the Southern African Development Community from 2019 to 2020.
Magufuli graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with majors in chemistry and mathematics as teaching subjects from the of University of Dar es Salaam in 1988.
He is married to Mrs Janet Magafuli and they're blessed with two children, Joseph and Jessica Magafuli.
