Opinion: Two states PDP may recover from the APC before 2023

There are at least two states the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) may lose to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the commencement of the general elections in 2023. Currently, the APC controls 22 states across the country, while the PDP controls 13 states. But ahead of the governorship elections in some states in the Southwest next year, the PDP may recover two more states from the APC after the election and move to 15 states. Two states in the Southwest that will conduct governorship elections in 2022 are Ekiti and Osun states. Considering some political developments in these states, below is my analysis of each state and why the PDP may win them.

The Ekiti state APC has been embroiled in a crisis involving the Governor of the state, Kayode Fayemi and President Muhammadu Buhari’s special adviser on political matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu. Though, both men including the minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola met at the Governor’s office in July, the details of their meeting was however not revealed. If the crisis between the duo is not handled carefully as we approach the elections in June, 2022, the PDP may capitalize on this and capture the state from the APC. Apart from this, the influence of former Governor and “godfather” of Ekiti state PDP, Ayo Fayose could play a big part in the PDP capturing the state from the APC. Fayose is grassroots politician, a factor which helped him defeat Governor Fayemi in 2014.

Osun state.

In Osun state, one candidate the PDP may likely field to challenge the incumbent Governor, Ggboyega Oyetola, ahead on next year’s governorship election is Senator Ademola Adeleke. Recall that Senator Adeleke lost to Governor Oyetola in controversial circumstances in the 2018 governorship election in the state.

Apart from this, there seems to be a brewing crisis between Governor Oyetola and a former Governor of the state, Rauf Aregbesola. This could affect the APC’s chances of winning if the crisis between them is not resolved. Also, Senator Adeleke who is the younger brother to Billionaire father of popular musician, Davido, has the financial muscle to challenge whoever the APC picks to run against him. This important factor coupled with his popularity in the state could sway the election in PDP’s favour come July, 16, 2022.
