Does the UN Have The Power To Sanction Nigeria If Nigeria Refuses To Release Kanu? - Babajide Otitoju

A lot of people and groups all over Nigeria have been wondering and rhetorically asking if the UN has the power to sanction Nigeria following its recent call for the release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

However, multiple award-winning journalist, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju has taken his time to explain that Nigeria is under the UN and is thus expected to conform to the conventions of the organisation.

The investigative journalist analysed the question of whether the UN Have The Power To Sanction Nigeria If Nigeria Refuses To Release Kanu on Saturday (30th July 2022)edition of his TV programme titled 'Issues with Jide'.

 Reacting to the question, Babajide said;

“If you are a signatory to certain UN conventions, the UN expects you to honour those conventions. In our case, we(the Nigerian government) are a signatory to the UN Charter on extradition, so if our leaders take any action that appears to be against the charter, the UN will take a deep view of it and take its constitutional actions and trust me, we wouldn't want to be on that side of the road. We've seen leaders going against the UN Charter in the past and they were eventually brought to justice.

We've seen situations like this before, we're not expecting punishment in the real sense of the word per se but I think there are other ways that the UN can get its message across. The Nigerian government is a member of the UN and thus expected to conform to the conventions of the organisation although I do don't see us releasing Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally".
