Lateef Jakande was born on july 23, 1929 in the Epetedo area of Lagos Island, Lagos. He was a Nigerian journalist who became the governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983.
He had his education both in Lagos and Port Harcourt. Jakande first studied at the Lagos public school in Lagos Island, Bunham Memorial Methodist School, Port Harcourt and lastly he studied briefly at King's College, Lagos.
Jakande began his career as a journalist with the Daily Service and then later he joined the Nigerian Tribune. He later established John West Publications and began to publish The Lagos News. He was the first President of the NPAN (Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria).
