2023: What Ayu Agreed With Northern PDP Stakeholders That May Shape Party's Internal Politics

On Thursday, a former Senate President, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, emerged as the consensus national chairmanship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), after a series of meetings held by Northern PDP stakeholders.

Two other contenders from the North, where the position has been zoned to by the party's National Executive Committee (NEC), were said to have stepped down for Ayu to emerge.

However, while this political development appeared to have given the South an edge in regards to which zone the party's presidential candidate may likely emerge from, since usually, the tradition of the party do not allow the party's national chairman and its presidential candidate to emerge from the same zone, a purpoted agreement which Ayu had with the Northern PDP stakeholders may change the tide of things.

This is because information gathered revealed that, the ex-Senate President emergence as consensus PDP national chairman did not happen without him entering into some political agreements as pertaining to 2023 presidency.

Ayu was said to have agreed with the Northern stakeholders that, his emergence will not preclude anybody from any zone from contesting the presidency, pointing to the fact that the party is expected to throw open its presidential ticket as recommended by Governor Bala Mohammed-led committee report on 2019 presidential election.

Additionally, it was gathered that Ayu was made to sign an undertaken that, if the emergence of a presidential candidate tilts the scale in favour of any zone in the North, he will resign and work for the candidate.

In other words, since the PDP presidential primary is likely to hold within a year's time, going by the February 2023 presidential election date given by the INEC, it thus means that if the PDP NEC decides to throw the presidential ticket open and a Northerner happens to emerge as the party's presidential candidate, then, Ayu would resign his position as the party's national chairman according to this said agreement, and because traditionally, the party do not allow the party's national chairman and its presidential candidate to emerge from the same zone.

Consequently, as political permutations concerning 2023 presidential election continues, Nigerians can await many other political intrigues that are set to unfold in the opposition party PDP, in the coming weeks or months.

But in your view, if the PDP decides to throw its presidential ticket open, which zone do you think may likely clinch the ticket ?
