There are six geopolitical zones in the country. The north has (northwest, northeast and north centre) while south has southwest, southeast and south-south. But the northwest zone may be schemed out of the whole plan of the People's Democratic Party. There are two reasons the zone won't feature in what the PDP does.
There is no doubt that the northwest region is the largest in terms of number of states and population. And any party that wants to succeed won't overlook or jettison the region. However, with the look of how things are transpiring in the PDP, the northwest zone may lose out.
The first reason is that the PDP has fallen out of love in the region. The people and top politicians have clearly abandoned the political party for the All Progressives Congress. Out of the seven big states in the region, the All Progressives Congress takes six leaving only one for the PDP.
Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, the Sokoto State governor, is the only PDP governor in the region. And top politicians of the PDP in that zone are either old or they have left the political party making it very difficult for the party. And the party will have to critically examine how things are going in the zone.
Mr. Bello Matawalle, the Zamfara State governor, recently dumped the PDP. The party would have been a bit okay in northwest. The departure of Matawalle dealt a devasting blow to the PDP in the region. And that would make the PDP to look away and consider some other subregions in the wider northern region.
The second reason is that the PDP would want to allow other subregions to have some influence. Of course, the northwest has produced two governors since 1999. The late Umar Yar'adua was from Katsina State just like Buhari himself. And if northwest has produced two presidents since 1999, it will be unfair to let the same zone dominate 2023 struggle.
There is a vacancy at the national secretariat of the PDP and a northerner would want to fill it. Mr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor, may be on the list of top contenders for the vacancy. But PDP leadership would be skeptical about picking its chairman from the region that has apparently abandoned the political party.
