Atiku Abubakar may not have much time to waste as the 2023 presidential election is drawing closer. The earlier he starts preparing for the challenges, the better for him. He may not have to worry about it if he doesn't have interest in leading the country again. There are two ways he can get ready for the task.
The National Executive Council has thrown the competition open. And it is within the reach of the former vice president to clinch the ticket of the opposition party. He can struggle for it and get it for the second consecutive time. He led the party in the 2019 election.
The first way he can get ready for the seat is to look for a good and strong politician for the vacant chairman's seat. Recall that the PDP would need to find another person who would lead the opposition party to the 2023 general elections. Mr. Atiku Abubakar has a role to play here. And if he doesn't put right person in the office, he risks failing to clinch the ticket.
Meanwhile, he needs to understand that the next Chairman of the party must not come from northeastern zone. The reason is that the PDP may not want to pick the chairman and the presidential candidate from the same geopolitical zone. Atiku Abubakar is from northeast.
At the same time he needs to look for ways to stop Mr. Bukola Saraki. The former senate president seems to have his own ambition and he will work towards actualising it this time around. Note that Bukola Saraki was in the presidential race within the PDP in 2018.
The second way he can prepare for the convention is by lobbying some southern politicians who can be in his team for the race. He can't do it alone because the convention involves southern leaders. And no candidate for the PDP job may emerge without the contribution of the southern governors and leaders.
And while he is doing this, he should have it at the back of his mind that he would pick his vice presidential candidate from southeastern Nigeria. Of course, the PDP can boast of Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Enugu State Governor, whose tenure ends in 2023. Ugwuanyi can be the person that the former vice president may need.
And if Atiku feels like he wants to retain his friendship with Peter Obi, he can actually liaise with the former governor. But one thing that is clear is that Atiku would need a politician who currently holds power or leads the people. Hence, Peter Obi may have to be changed.
