The race for 2023 presidential election has already begun as influential political players from different zones fight for their zones to produce the successor of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Politicians from the northern and southern regions have been at loggerhead over the agitation for zoning of the presidential position.
While the southern Nigeria believes the position of the president should be zoned to their region after the eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari who hails from the north, the northerners on the other hand described the demand of their southern counterparts as undemocratic.

On the platform of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, the southern Governors had earlier demanded for the zoning of the party's presidential ticket to their region following the zoning of the position of the party's chairmanship position to the north.
Many southern politicians on the platform of PDP were not happy when the party decided to throw its presidential ticket open for all aspirants despite zoning its National Chairman to the north.

Some influential political players have argued that it would be against the tradition of PDP to produce presidential candidate and national chairman of the party from the same region and called on PDP to reconsider its stand on the zoning of the presidential ticket.
However, the recent revelation of the northern consensus candidate for PDP National Chairman, former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu, might help Peter Obi, one of the influential southern politicians who have been tipped to emerge as the presidential candidate of PDP.

According to a report by Vanguard, Senator Ayu who recently emerged as the northern consensus candidate for the position of PDP National Chairman disclosed that he is ready to give up his chairmanship position if a northern presidential candidate emerge in PDP.
This is coming ahead of the PDP national convention slated for 30-31 October. This revelation means that the incoming National Chairman of PDP will allow transparency and fairness to play in the PDP presidential primaries, it has also shown that he would not play ethnic card ahead of the presidential primaries.
The former Senate President has been out of power, he needs to protect his position when he is finally sworn in as the National chairman of PDP.
It would be detrminental for him to favour northern politicians because the emergence of northern presidential candidate will cost him his position. It will make him to resign because PDP presidential candidate and National Chairman cannot come from the same region.
With this new revelation, the incoming National Chairman of PDP would not compromise because it will cost him his position, it has also shown that there would be a level playing ground in the PDP presidential primaries. This development might help the former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, who has been tipped to fly the presidential ticket of PDP in 2023.
Recall that there have been agitation for Igbo presidency in 2023 because the Southeast region has not produced the president of Nigeria since the return of democracy in 1999.
With the support the agitation for Igbo presidency is gaining, the revelation of Senator Ayu might help Peter Obi to grab the presidential ticket of PDP because Ayu would ensure fairness and transparency in the PDP presidential primaries to save his job as PDP National Chairman.
