Soon after the Peoples Democratic Party NEC ratified the zoning report of the Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi zoning committee, which recommended the ceding of the national party chairman’s office to the North, the Northern PDP caucus has held a series of meetings to determine a preferred candidate.
According to media reports, the Northern PDP leaders are careful to ensure that whoever emerges PDP chairman will work for the interest of the region. But the Northern PDP leaders are not the only ones making secret moves to take control of the party structure. According to a recent report in Tribune, the Southern PDP leaders are also making their moves.
What are the recent moves by the Southern PDP Governors to take control of the PDP party structure, and how can it favour Wike’s quest for presidency?

The Southern Governors are alleged to be secretly working on a plan to install Ayu as PDP chairman..
According to Tribune, the Southern Governors are working closely with Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom to ensure that Senator Ayu emerges as PDP chairman.
Governor Ortom has allegedly been charged with the responsibility to market Ayu to the Northern PDP leaders. He is also relying on the fact that Ayu is the only Christian in the race for the top position. A report in Punch also confirms that Ortom has been soliciting support for Ayu.
If Ortom succeeds in installing Ayu as party chairman with support from the Southern Governors, this could mean that the Southern Governors may subtly take control of the PDP party structure. And this might put them in position to influence the presidential ticket race in favour of a Southern candidate.
How will Wike benefit from the strategy?
The reason why this could benefit Wike is because he is one of the strong Southern contenders for the presidential ticket. Though Wike has not confirmed the report that he will run, but there are many reports indicating he will.

So, if the Southern Governors can succeed in their plan to control the party structure through Senator Ayu, it will most likely favour Wike or any other Southern candidates in the race to emerge as the Presidential candidate.

But the Northern cabals are not falling for such tricks. They are sensing danger and are stoutly opposed to Ayu’s candidacy.
Instead of Ayu, they are trying to impress it on the party to zone the party chairman to either Northern East or North West. One of the names that have been suggested is former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Markafi.
The dust around the PDP chairman is expected to settle in the next few days. Will it be Ayu or someone else? Time will tell.
