The People's Democratic Party has its own internal issues in Oyo State. The PDP seems to be formidable after its victory in the last gubernatorial election. But recent events have shown that the party is partly divided and Mr. Seyi Makinde must act now to save his own fate in 2023.
The Nigerian Tribune reported that about fifty vehicles were vandalised yesterday when some hoodlums stormed factional congress. One thing that is clear is that the PDP is factionalised in Oyo State though one faction may be bigger and stronger than the second one. The congress was being conducted at the Jogor Event Centre, Ibadan.
The issue of factionalisation is really disturbing the PDP in Oyo State despite the fact that the party is in power and the head of the southwest PDP, Taofeek Arapaja, is from Oyo State as well. Mr. Makinde can't afford to watch while things go out of hand in the Oyo State PDP.
To worsen the situation, the faction was able to elect Mr. Michael Okunlade as the chairman of the PDP in the state. Therefore, based on the report of the Nigerian Tribune, there is a factional chairman in Oyo PDP.
Mr. Seyi Makinde may not be concerned at all because his own faction of the PDP could easily outnumber the other side of the party. But one thing he should bear in mind is that the other faction may approach the court. And before Makinde knows it, the other faction would become the authentic leadership of the PDP in the state. Hence, he needs to act now.
Apart from that, the faction can cause a deep division within the party. And when there is division, there would be confusion. And it should be clear that the crisis could open a door for the All Progressives Congress to return to power in Oyo State.
It should be noted that Mr. Makinde is the main leader of the PDP in the southwest region. He is the only PDP governor. If he can't address the internal Oyo PDP crisis, how would he be able to solve regional matters of the PDP?
Lastly, the next gubernatorial election is around the corner. Preparations have fully started and it is imperative for Seyi Makinde to put the PDP in order. And while he is doing that, he should avoid making mistakes that can escalate tension and rekindle the party problems.
