Opinion: One Major Reason Why Goodluck Jonathan Should Not Turn Down An Opportunity To Rule Nigeria Again

The forthcoming 2023 presidential election has begun to dominate the discussions of many political heavyweights in the country. In recent times, there have been rumours about an alleged plot by some powers within the All Progressives Congress (APC), to bring Goodluck Jonathan to the party. Recall that Goodluck Jonathan, a former President of Nigeria, won his first term election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but lost his second term bid to President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC in 2015.

Following his defeat, Goodluck Jonathan was quick to accept the outcome of the election, and congratulated his opponent, Muhammadu Buhari. Arguably, this singular act of sportsmanship, saved the country from an impending danger, and subsequently earned the former President, awards, and the respect of millions of Nigerians. There is no doubt that his administration was not without serious criticism. However, the manner in which he handled the outcome of the 2015 election, has endeared him to the people.

Since rumours began to make rounds about an alleged plot to bring Goodluck Jonathan to the APC, where he is alleged to likely emerge as the party’s flag-bearer in 2023 presidential election, many Nigerians have continued to argue that the former President should not bother coming back to rule the country again. To some, the reason is not that the former President does not have the capacity to move the country forward, but to avoid losing his reputation.

To some others, there is nothing new that the former President is bringing to the table. However, in my view, Goodluck Jonathan should not turn down the opportunity to rule Nigeria once again. The reason for this is not far-fetched. You will agree with me that as someone who has ruled the country in the past for about six years, Jonathan now understands some of the challenges of governance in Nigeria.

In my view, coming back to rule the country is a golden opportunity for the former President to right his wrongs, and have his name written on gold in the annals of history. While I acknowledge the fact that failure to make positive impact could lead to ridicule, it is my view that if the opportunity is well-utilized, his wealth of experience could help to reposition the country for growth and development.
