Opinion: Any Igbo Man That Sees This Huge Project In The East Will Start Loving Buhari (More Photos)

Second Niger bridge is one of the laudable projects that is being executed in eastern part of Nigeria, the promise to build another bridge across the River Niger didn't start in fourth Republic which Olusegun Obasanjo started but it started in second Republic, when Shehu Shagari campaigned with it in old Eastern region, promising to construct another bridge over the River Niger, but unfortunately nothing tangible was done in relation to the project, till his administration got terminated by military.

Abubakar Umar who was the then Minister of works and housing under IBB, issued a warning about the state of the Niger bridge in 1987, which made the military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida to call on Nigeria engineers to design a new bridge and the Nigeria Society of Engineers quickly did as directed by coming up with a masterplan for a new bridge but the political issues that followed afterwards terminated the plan.

Another government that showed in interest in the construction of the bridge is former president Olusegun Obasanjo who equally promise to execute the project but he did nothing after eight years in office, it was remaining five days to leave to handover to the incoming president than he awarded the contract to the tune of 58.6 billion naira, and late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua inherited the project but he wasn't able to do tangible thing there because of his ill-health, followed by his sudden death.

Even former President Goodluck Jonathan promised to do the bridge during his campaign in 2011, but he didn't do anything there till he left in 2015.

Today, the project is gradually becoming a reality under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari who is seriously trying to complete the project before he leaves office in 2023.
