Mr. Obaseki has paid an important visit to the president, Muhammadu Buhari. The visit could have disturbed or bothered the top personalities within the PDP. But sentiment apart, two lessons can be learned from the visit of Obaseki to the office of the president of the federation. The two lessons would show how politics can be played.
Note that the Edo State governor, Obaseki, went to meet Buhari at a time the opposition party is seriously urging its members to remain in the party. For up to a year now, the PDP has lost three governors to the APC. Mr. Dave Umahi, Mr. Ben Ayade and Mr. Bello Matawalle have abandoned the PDP. And they went to have a meeting with Buhari upon their defection. Hence, PDP may be worried about Obaseki's visit.
The first lesson that can be learnt is that Mr. Godwin Obaseki often faces the reality. He is not a type of politicians that join the bandwagon. He does his things and plays his political game without being biased or considering political affiliation.
Normally, Obaseki would have totally abandoned everything that concerns the APC. And he wouldn't have maintained the rapport he had with Buhari. The All Progressives Congress denied him an opportunity to run on the platform of the party for the second time.
Mr. Obaseki had issues with Mr. Adams Oshiomole, who strongly opposed the second term bid of Obaseki on APC platform. Buhari couldn't do much to help Obaseki at that time. Hence, the governor left the APC for the PDP. Nevertheless, he still honours and respects the president.
Recall that Mr. Obaseki also visited Buhari in September, 2020. Yes, immediately after the Edo State poll, Obaseki travelled to thank Buhari for maintaining neutrality in the Edo State gubernatorial election. Hence, Obaseki has shown that he can maintain his rapport with any top leader.
The second lesson is that President Muhammadu Buhari won't stop showing himself to be a tolerant leader. He doesn't show any negative attitude to people who belong to the oppositions. Recall that the president could have avoided PDP leaders. The political party often criticises his administration. Yet he opens his doors for people of other political affiliations.
The meeting between Mr Godwin Obaseki and Muhammadu Buhari has now clearly showed that the president welcomes everyone. He is ready to see any politician irrespective of parties, religion, ethnicity or gender.
