Governor Makinde Inaugurates Assistant Commissioner of Police as Environmental Task Force Chairman

The Oyo state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde has inaugurated the state Environmental Task Force to curtail the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on waterways and enforce stiffer punishment on offenders.

While briefing newsmen on the new modus operandi of managing waste in the state, the chairman of the newly inaugurated Task Force on Environment, assistant commissioner of police, ACP Francis Ojomo, said anyone caught dumping refuse on waterways or dispose of waste indiscriminately will be dealt with according to the environmental laws of the state.

The ACP noted that the Task Force will adopt both persuasive and enforcement approach with the claim that enforcement will be the order of the day as offenders have the grace of this week.

In his remark, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Environment, Dr. Bashir Olanrewaju explained that the Task Force was made of various social/political groups and law enforcement agencies.

He added that the Task Force working time has been extended from 7 to 24 hours per day and offenders will be arrested both day and night and charged to any of the six environmental tribunals established by the government.

He harped that citizens who are dodging Waste collection levies will be forced to pay and Governor Makinde will in few weeks launch the state reformed Waste collection System.
