Two Recent Indications That Governor Wike May Have Lost Out in The 2023 Power Struggle in PDP

In many quarters, River State Governor Nyesom Wike is considered one of the most powerful politicians in the Peoples Democratic Party. And he never shies away from wielding his powers.

Governor Wike almost singlehandedly installed the former PDP National Working Committee Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus against the wishes of the party bigwigs. And when he fell out with Secondus, he successfully led the charge to kick him out.

As his tenure as Governor gradually comes to an end, Wike has been making deft moves to extend his influence and to sustain his relevance beyond 2023, but he has been stoutly resisted by PDP governors and other party bigwigs, in a move that shows that the Governor may be losing out in the 2023 power struggle.

This article will analyse two recent indications that Wike is losing out in the 2013 power game.

PDP groups have ganged up together to whittle down his influence on the party

The events of the last few months which saw Governor Wike holding the party to ransom and instigating a crisis that almost caused an implosion has triggered some realignment in the PDP. Some of the party’s elders and bigwigs who have hitherto been on the sidelines have come together to form groups in a bid to whittle down Wike’s influence and power on the party. Some of the groups include the ex-PDP Governors forum led by Babangida Aliyu (a well known Wike antagonist), ex- PDP House of Representative Members Forum, led by Emeka Ihedioha and ex-PDP Minister Forum.

All of them have banded together to reduce Wike’s overbearing influence on the party and to ensure he doesn’t have control over the new PDP party leadership.

Wike tried to lobby PDP Governors to jettison zoning the presidency to boost his rumoured Presidential ambition but he failed

In another example of Wike's waning influence, the River State Governor in an alleged bid to save his rumoured presidential ambition lobbied the PDP Governors to throw the presidential ticket open so that anyone can contest, irrespective of region. But his effort failed when the Governor refused his pleas.

According to Vanguard Newspaper, Wike told the Governors that zoning the Presidency to the North will undermine merit and could prevent the party from fielding its strongest candidate.

But the Governor could see through his real motive, so they rejected his overtures. The report noted that out of 13 PDP Governors 12 are in support of the Zoning.
