Will the parallel congresses held in Lagos APC end Tinubu’s dominance in the state?

It appears all is not well in the Lagos chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as disgruntled members who are not happy about the leadership style of former Lagos Governor and national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, held separate state Congresses to elect new state executives for the party yesterday.

While the Congress backed by Tinubu was held at the Mobolaji Johnson arena, and was attended by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu and other elected officials from Lagos; two separate parallel congresses were also held at different venues by a former Governor of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode and Olajide Adediran aka Jandor, the leader of the Lagos4Lagos movement.

Interestingly, a report by Sahara reporters alleged that the Congress held by Ambode has the backing of the national leadership of the APC led by Chairman, Caretaker/ Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Mai Mala Buni. The report further claimed that Buni is backing the Congress held by Ambode to weaken the influence of Tinubu in the party.

If this report is anything to go by, will this end the dominance of Tinubu in Lagos politics?

While one may not be able to tell what the final outcome of this would be, the political antecedent of Tinubu when faced with similar political onslaught may be helpful. Tinubu survived the political onslaught of the PDP-led federal government of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan when they tried to end his influence in Lagos.

Recall that during Obasanjo’s tenure, the PDP in a bid to dominate the Southwest and end Tinubu’s ambition to return for second term, captured all the Southwest states except Lagos from the then Alliance for Democracy, the political party of Tinubu when he was Governor from 1999-2007. Also, Tinubu was acquitted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal during Jonathan's government in 2011 for operating a foreign account while he was Governor. Many supporters of Tinubu see the Tribunal probe as witch-hunt against their leader by the Jonathan government.

Considering the magnitude and the outcome of the above political battles Tinubu was involved in, I am of the opinion that the parallel congresses held in Lagos won't end his influence in the state. However, the former Lagos Governor should make moves to reconcile aggrieved members within the Lagos APC and not underrate their threats.
