Ondo 2020: Jegede's Request Granted, Tribunal Begins Sitting

The 2020 Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal today held its inaugural session in Akure and gave the candidate for governor of the People's Democratic Party, Eyitayo Jegede, the leeway to inspect the materials used for the October 10 elections in which Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was re-elected.

The Tribunal, headed by Justice Umar Abubakar, also issued an order to replace Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. In an exparte order, Justice Abubakar, who headed the other two judges of the court, granted the orders of one of Jegede 's counsel, Jamiu Makinde.

He won 15 of INEC 's 18 Local Government Areas results, while his closest competitor, Jegede, won in three local government areas, and Ajayi failed to win none, including his LGA, where he lost to his principal.

Akeredolu polled 292,830 against Jegede, who won 195,791. Unhappy with the result of the election, Jegede approached the court. Among the grounds, the election was marred by irregularities and pockets of violence, as well as harassment and flawed presence of Akeredolu at the APC primaries.

He also requested an order granting access to the materials used for the October 10 elections, the governorship elections and the custody of the Independent National Electoral Commission. He identified the local councils in which electoral materials are to be obtained, including Owo, Eseodo, Ilaje, Okitipupa and others. The President of the Tribunal, Justice Umaru Abubakar, gave the order and said the petitioner.
