Though early, the major political gladiators for the 2023 presidential election are already staking their claims. Going by the formula of rotational presidency, presidential power is expected to come to the South.
Ahmed Bola Tinubu particularly is making ferocious attempts to ensure power comes, if not his way, then to one of his people from his ethnic stock. Tinubu, Fashola and Osibanjo made it clear to their South-West audience while campaigning for Buhari during the last election; that a PMB win will ensure power shifts to the South-West. For a man who does not make empty threats, Tinubu does not make empty promises.
Tinubu
Though still too early, Buhari in his taciturn manner has not clearly stated the zone he will support to clinch the APC's Presidential ticket; neither has he identified his preferred successor. Yet, he will not do so without practical consideration. For example, how will he support a South-East or a South-South candidate when both zones are still hostile to APC?
Therefore, it is not to be farfetched that political exigency can make Buhari tweak the idea of Igbo presidency but might end up supporting former Governor of River State and the current Minister of Transportation, Amaechi Rotimi.
It doesn't take rocket science to understand that most presidents pick their allies as successors. Obasanjo reportedly made Umaru Yar’adua president, because he owed the Yaradua family eternal gratitude.
Rotimi
Beyond dinning with Buhari, Rotimi Ameachi has worked twice as his Campaign Director General. This technically means, Ameachi has had a hand in Buhari's political success more than anyone else. This is why Tinubu must be weary of his relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari.
Nevertheless, the issues of whether Ameachi has made peace with his people will somewhat determine his fate in 2023. Beyond political permutations, if Rotimi Ameachi eventually declares interest to succeed Muhammadu Buhari, he will be a major obstacle to Tinubu and his men.
