2 Key Things Yakasai Accused Igbos Of Lacking That May Force APC To Snub Them Ahead Of 2023 Election

Daily Post reported that a key member of The All Progressives Congress (APC) has now accused Igbos of lacking two key things that, according to him, would force the APC to snub the South-East when considering regions that the 2023 Presidency should be zoned to.

The 2023 Presidency has been a source of constant debate between political analysts and stakeholders. Since the current president hails from the North, the South, especially the South-East, has been clamouring for the zoning of the next presidency to the Igbos, arguing that since the country returned to democratic rule in 1999, the South-East is yet to produce a president.

Yakasai has now opined that the APC would not zone the 2023 Presidency to the South-East because, according to him, they lack the following two qualities:

1. Unity And One Voice When It Comes To The 2023 Presidency.

2. The Numbers To Produce A President.

Are the Igbos really lacking unity and the numbers to produce a president in Nigeria's current political system? We would see below.

First, it has been observed that when it comes to the issue of the 2023 presidency, the Igbos have never been as united as they are now. The Ohaneze Ndigbo (Igbo Elders), Ohaneze Youth Council (Igbo Youths) and Igbo politicians have constantly lobbied for the 2023 Presidency, describing it as the birthright of the Igbos if zoning is to be considered.

Of course, it is normal to hear one or two dissenting voices; however, the majority of Igbos are quite united in calls for the zoning of the 2023 Presidency.

On Yakasai's second claim, he is actually right to say the Igbos do now have the numbers required. However, the constitution stipulates that for a president to emerge, he must have had at least 25% of the total votes cast in 24 states in Nigeria. Even the entire South region or the North cannot boast of having the 24 states required to elect a president. Based on all these, Yakasai's statement cannot be used by the APC to decide if the 2023 Presidency should be zoned to the Igbos or not.
