Why Anambra House Of Assembly Drafted Bill To Allocate 50 Hectares Of Land To Herders For Ranching

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State is one of the Governors in the South-East who have not signed the anti-open grazing bill into law. Many have attributed it to the fact the Governor will soon leave office and also that the state is going to the polls in November.

However, the Anambra State House of Assembly has commenced the process of passing a bill that will ban open grazing in the state which is one of the decisions of Southern Governors.

However, the Assembly upon resuming from its annual recess drafted a bill that will allocate 50 hectares of land to individual cattle breeders who want to go into Ranching according to Punch newspaper. In this article, we will be discussing why the lawmakers in Anambra State came up with this bill.

The state wants to do something different from what other Southern states have done by providing alternatives to cattle breeders which will make them not feel stranded when open grazing is banned in the state.

Also, the Assembly wants herders to see ranching as an alternative option. But I don't see this idea of allocating 50 hectares of land for ranching scaling through.

Take, for instance, participants from Anambra State who attended a public hearing on this rejected it insisting that the state doesn't have land for land not to talk of allocating 50 hectares of land to cattle breeders for ranching.

My understanding is that the administration of Willie Obiano wants to be fair to all parties involved in this matter.

Why do I say so, the House of Assembly invited Miyetti Allah cattle breeders to the public hearing where this drafted bill was presented to the stakeholders.

Anambra State government appears to have listened to the call of some Northern Governors which is that states that want to ban open grazing should carry Miyetti Allah along and seek their input before taking any action.

However, we wait to see if the Assembly will pass a bill banning open grazing and allocation of 50 hectares of land to individual cattle breeders for ranching.
