As we continue to approach the 2023 general elections, the major political parties, the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have began to make moves on who will be their presidential candidate.
In the APC, the revelation by the national secretary, caretaker and extraordinary convention planning committee (CECPC), John Akpanudoehede, that the party may use a consensus to choose its presidential candidate has began to attract speculations. I read a report by Sahara reporters, that use of a consensus method was targeted at preventing former Governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu from becoming the party’s flag bearer.
The report further stated that if the consensus method was not used, Tinubu would have won easily in a free and fair contest. Though this is just a speculation and even if it is not, Tinubu has yet to formally declare his interest to run for president in 2023. But on the basis of this speculation, one option I think Tinubu should consider strongly if he would be denied the opportunity to run for president is to back the vice president, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, to be the presidential candidate of the APC.
Tinubu is a very influential political figure. He has had hands in the emergence of Governors and legislators. He was even instrumental in the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari as president. If not for his political influence in the Southwest, the APC probably would have lost the 2015 and 2019 elections to the PDP. Tinubu was also instrumental in the emergence of Prof Osinbajo as the running mate to President Buhari.
Meanwhile, the vice President has in the past shown he has the capacity to lead the affairs of this country.
Between January 19, 2017 and March 13, 2017 when he had the privilege to be acting President while President Buhari was away on medical trip, he piloted the the affairs of the country properly and had some notable achievements within that short period. According to legit.ng, some of the notable achievements he had are:
Mandating the presidential taskforce on food security to reduce the prices of food across the country.
Approved the construction of road projects worth ₦126 billion in Kano, Kaduna, Kwara, Gombe, Adamawa, Bauchi and Enugu states.
Rolled out the framework for the clean up exercise of Ogoni land.
Construction of the Cameroun- Nigeria link bridge at Ikot Efiem for $39.9 million.
Apart from this, the vice President is known to be someone who has deep patriotism for the unity of Nigeria. He is a person of integrity. He has had an untarnished record in both the public and private sector where has served.
