Anambra Poll: Why Security Operatives Must Ensure Residents Flouts IPOB's Sit-at-Home Order

With just about two weeks to the conduct of November 6 governorship election in Anambra State, the prevailing insecurity situation in the state has continued to be a source of worry to many Nigerians and political stakeholders.

The state in recent times, has witnessed pockets of attacks on political chieftains and campaign trains from hoodlums/unknown gunmen.

To this end, just two days ago, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the Armed Forces and other security agencies in Nigeria, to ensure that nothing stops the November 6 governorship poll in the State.

But while many residents of the state have thought this marching orders given by Buhari will help restore sanity into the state and ensure an hitch-free governorship elections, on Saturday, things took a different turn after the Indigenous People of of Biafra (IPOB) declared a one week sit-at-home protest from November 5 to November 10, to prevail on the Federal Government to release its leader, Nnamdi Kanu

Consequently, the security forces deployed to Anambra state must work hard, reassure residents and ensure this purpoted Sit-at-home order by IPOB is scuttled to avoid constitutional crisis.

This is more important because, if not checked, it may result in voter apathy on election day, as a result of voters being fearful of possible violence that may erupt if they troop out to vote.

Besides, this may lead to inability of any of the governorship candidates to fulfil the mandatory constitutional requirements to become a Governor.

Since Section 179(1)(b) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, mandatorily requires a candidate for an election to the office of governor of a state, to have not less than one quarter of the votes cast at the election in each of at least two thirds of all the local government areas in the state, before the candidate can be deemed to have been duly elected as the Governor of the State.

With this, it is pertinent that security forces help the state and the country to avoid constitutional crisis which may arise if the November 6 Anambra election is disrupted.

However, do you agree that with the huge number of security operatives already deployed to Anambra state, combined with those that would still join them days to election, residents would be willing to go out enmasse to vote for candidate of their choice ?
