The Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Committee has set up an electoral committee to oversee the Ondo State APC primary election in which a candidate that will represent the party will emerge for the 2020 gubernatorial election in the state.
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello (chairman) will lead Olorogun o’tega Emerhor OON (Secretary), Alwan Hassan, Samuel Sambo, Hajiya Binta Salihu, Emma Andy, Adebayo Adelabu, Abdullahi Aliyu, Margret Ngozi Igwe
The committee has to make its first decision and it is very important for the electoral committee to be very careful and meticulous while handling the primary election. The committee has to make a lot of decisions, but the first one will determine whether the committee will succeed or not.
The APC committee has to decide the pattern of voting to be used. It has to come out clean as to whether it will use direct primary election or the indirect one.
Though the All Progresives Congress has said that indirect primary will be used, the committee can still make a decision which will be final based on consultations it will make.
Mr. Olusola Oke, one of the leading candidates in the race for the APC ticket has opted for direct primary in which all registered members of the party will participate and vote for an aspirant they want. Mr. Oke believes he stands a better chance if the APC uses the direct primary election.
Also, Rotimi Akeredolu has appeared to prefer indirect primary election though he argued that he would still win no matter the choice of the party. However, from all indications, Rotimi Akeredolu wants indirect primary.
Now, Mr. Yahaya Bello has to decide on the mode of voting his committee wants and he should quickly make a pronouncement.
The committee may decide to stick to the decision of the party or present another idea based on the consultation they will make.
While making its decision, the electoral committee should try to carry all the aspirants along so as to ensure equality, transparency and accountability.
