Opinion: Tinubu may have found a perfect running mate in Boss Mustapha.

One name that has consistently been linked to be the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections is the former Governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Just recently, a former national chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Rufai Hanga, claimed during an interview with Daily Trust, that there was an implied agreement that President Muhammadu Buhari will handover to Tinubu when his tenure ends in 2023. The former CPC chairman also claimed that the reason why Tinubu did not leave the APC after the President’s first term was because of this agreement.

If Tinubu is picked by the APC to succeed President Buhari in 2023, then it is most likely that his running mate will come from the North. Also being a Muslim from the South, the APC will have to get the permutation right by pairing a Northern Christian candidate as his deputy. A Muslim-Muslim joint ticket may damage the chances of the APC at the polls if the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presents a Christian-Muslim ticket or a Muslim-Christian ticket. As a result of this, one suitable candidate from the North that may be Tinubu’s running mate in 2023 is, Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

Boss Mustapha is a Christian from Adamawa state, in the Northeast region. He is not new to politics, he has held several appointments in the past and even ran unsuccessfully for the governorship seat in Adamawa in 2014. Before his appointment as the SGF by President Buhari, he was the former deputy national chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), a party Tinubu founded in 2006. This means he must have been in the good books of Tinubu.

Recall that the ACN later merged with other political parties to become the APC in 2013. Though Adamawa has some prominent political big wigs like the former vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who belongs to the PDP, that may not stop the Tinubu/Mustapha ticket from capturing Adamawa state in 2023. The Northeast and the Northwest has been the strongholds of the APC in the last two presidential elections. In fact in 2015, the PDP lost Adamawa to the APC. With Tinubu’s influence in the Southwest and APC's dominance in the majority of the Northern states, the Tinubu/Mustapha ticket will be a force to reckon with in 2023 if the APC pairs them together.
