How A Policeman Was Seen Voting At APC Congress In Kano As Party Leaders Watch

A picture has been circulating on the internet showing a policeman casting vote during the recently concluded congresses of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in Kano State.

The policeman identified as Bashir Muhammad is said to be attached to the Kano State Government House but was assigned as a guard to the new APC Chairman elected by the faction loyal to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State. The Chairman elected by Ganduje's faction is Abdullahi Abbas.

In its official reaction, the Police in Kano confirmed this incident adding that the policeman was seen voting alongside Abbas who he is assigned to guard. The Police also vowed to investigate the incident and take the required disciplinary measures against Muhammad if found culpable.

Why the police, the Kano State Government and Kano APC need to act on this issue

This issue is a very serious case that should not be swept under the carpet. For now, it is only in Kano that this kind of issue was reported despite the fact that APC congresses held in all the states across the country. Why is it Kano? There was a time it was alleged that underage voting happens in Kano but it was denied by the authorities. Now, it is voting by a policeman. Police authorities, Kano State Government and the ruling APC in the state need to act to clear this as it may affect elections in the state ahead of 2023 general elections.

Again, the Nigerian law forbids the police and security agents from being involved in partisan politics. They can only come and provide security during elections if invited. As serving security agents, they are to maintain political neutrality. But, the case of Muhammad is strange. He was not only interfering in the process but he was caught on camera voting. Who gave him membership card? Who accredited him and allowed him to vote? This is the more reason this case needs to be treated with the seriousness it deserves.

Moreover, he was not voting in secret. He was voting openly where others could see him. In fact, he was casting his vote right in the presence of some top APC leaders including his principal. This has cast a serious dent on the kind of leadership in place in the party.

It may also affect the credibility of elections that may hold in Kano if the Kano Police authorities, Ganduje and the APC as a party do not handle the case well and ensure that those found culpable are brought to book.
