Bola Ahmed Tinubu is among the top politicians who have been very much conspicuous about their presidential ambition. The former Lagos state governor has been meeting with various stakeholders, including the incumbent President Buhari, with the hopes of getting an endorsement from him.
With the current debate about the north refusing to adopt the power rotation formula, it is becoming more unlikely that Tinubu will get the support of Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Why Tinubu needs Buhari's Endorsement
The northern region of Nigeria is vast and blessed with a large concentration of human resources. To a politician, a large population simply translates to juicy votes that is crucial during elections. This region holds the largest amount of registered voters in Nigeria, and President Muhammadu Buhari is very much popular among eligible voters in the north.
Tinubu has had his eyes set on the nation's highest political office for a very long time. The former governor of Lagos state will be counting on the support of his long-time ally, Buhari, to help him win the north. But, there is only one problem that may prevent Buhari from publicly endorsing Tinubu's candidacy. Recently, The northern governors' forum maintained that the region may not proceed with the unwritten rule of power rotation as suggested by the southern region. This will pose a serious threat to Tinubu's hopes of getting the president to endorse him.
The political romance between Buhari and Tinubu did not start as a result of the latter's current quest for power. In fact, Tinubu was very much instrumental in the process that brought Buhari to power in 2015. With the constant visit by Tinubu to the presidential Villa, it is now clear that a symbiotic relationship may have been cultivated between these two.
Tinubu is a brilliant politician who understands the game of politics to the very core. He is a political force in southwest Nigeria. But, the Jagaban” as he is fondly referred to by the media, knows that it is almost impossible to win the presidency without the support of the north.
