Opinion: Why The Newly Formed Opposition Party RPN, Could Shake APC In Future Elections

Ahead of the 2023 general election, a new political party has been formed by a group of technocrats and prominent men in Nigeria. This new party called the Rescue Nigeria Project, RNP, is believed to provide an alternative platform for Nigeria other than the All Progressive Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.

RPN is a party founded by some politicians, and technocrats such as the former INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, former Governor of Kwara State, Ahmed Abdulfatai, Prof. Pat Utomi, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, and a host of other prominent Nigerians.

Looking at the calibre of people who founded the RNP and the longing of some Nigerians to have a strong alternative party to the APC and PDP, there is a possibility that the new party could rub shoulders and shake the ruling party, APC, in future elections.

There have been statements by many Nigerians that both the All Progressive Congress and the People's Democratic Party are the same since many of the politicians' swap parties at will. A member of the People's Democratic Party may decide to decamp to the APC tomorrow and vice versa.

This drama of our politicians constantly changing political parties between these two parties has been going on for a long time and this has got to the neck of some Nigerians, who usually wish there could be an alternative party that has a strong foundation and is visible in all states that they could also be voted for during the election. This is because they have noticed that politicians in PDP and APC are the same group of people who are only changing political parties.

In the last few months, many members of the PDP have decamped to the APC after criticising the ruling party for years. Many people have begun to wonder how a party that a politician once described as evil could become a spirit-filled party after they joined it. This is one of the reasons why many people are expecting that there should be an alternative strong party that can wrestle power with both the APC and PDP and possibly defeat them.

Although there are many political parties in Nigeria apart from the APC and PDP, many of them do not have a group of prominent Nigerians that cut across the board like the newly formed Rescue Nigeria Project, RNP. The RNP, with this calibre of Nigerians, can be a party that will be highly reckoned with in future elections.

What do you think could be the future of RNP? Can RPN dislodge the APC, considering the type of high-profiled Nigerians that formed the party and the aspirations of some Nigerians who have always wished to have a strong alternative party to the APC and PDP?
