Barely 72 hours to the Anambra elections, the Northern Elders Forum, the NEF has stated their opinion on the Anambra governorship elections and also, offered their advice on how the state can conveniently pull out of the present chaotic situation it has found itself.
Recall the build-up to the elections has been met with stiff opposition from the outlawed IPOB group who have repeatedly vowed that the elections will not take place in the state.
In order to ensure a successful election in the state, the northern elders, also offered two suggestions which are:
1, The NEF advised the disbandment of the state's independent electoral commission, and to allow INEC to take over the duties of the electoral body in the state.
2, The NEF also advised the state government and security forces to do everything in their power to stop any plans by IPOB to cause any form of chaos during Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State
Recall the spate of violence in the southeast had necessitated a meeting of the Igbo Elders consultative forum led by former Anambra Governor, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife.
Ezeife had appealed to the Buhari-led administration to do two things that will bring peace to the region. Those things were the release of Nnamdi Kanu and the release of over 5000 arrested youths suspected to be members of the outlawed IPOB group.
Rejecting this move, the northern elders through the spokesperson, Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed had rather requested that the FG take a stiffer approach in the state as the elections approach.
The NEF had noted that it was not a wise decision to speak of releasing Nnamdi Kanu at this time adding that the option is premature.
They added that the FG should go ahead with Kanu's prosecution and that allowing Kanu to be released was tantamount to unleashing more danger on the southeast citizens since he could not control the attacks by his foot soldiers in the ESN.
