Governor Wike Reacts As Buhari Signs Controversial Petroleum Industry Bill

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has reacted to the petroleum industry bill signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari, who is currently isolating at home, signed the controversial bill into law on Monday, August 16, 2021.

In reaction to the development, Governor commended President Buhari for signing the bill. However, the governor said the president refused to listen to the recommendation and agitation of the host communities.

Wike said 3% allocation host communities in the bill is not enough to address the environmental challenges in the Niger Delta region.

Wike said this on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.

The Petroleum Industry Bill has generated a lot of controversies in the country in recent times. Many stakeholders argued that the 3 percent provision for host communities should be increased to 5%.

Despite the recommendation and agitation for 5% provision by host communities, President Buhari signed the bill on Monday with 3 percent provision.
