On the Monday edition of the TVC Journalists' Hangout, the recent statement by Dr Isa Pantami was discussed and veteran journalist, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, expressed his thoughts on Pantami's statement.
Here's an excerpt of Babajide Kolade-Otitoju's statement:
"We have to always be careful of what we say. Like I always say, time is a gentle man and time will catch up with you at some point. You words will be used against you in a matter of time. That is why once he get into a public office he should have organized a press conference and renounced whatever he said in the past.
Pantami has not given an apology, he has partially renounced his past statement. You should also know he has only given an explanation for making those statements in the past. An explanation is very different from an apology.
He(Isa Pantami) made statements that were divisive at some point and he made some correlations that completely made no sense, like comparing Boko Haram to Niger Delta militants, just to win an argument. So, he has to do what is right by renouncing publicly. He is not the first cleric to support and later renounce his statement. He has to come out and renounce properly not by explaining things away.
Yes by explaining, he has told us that he is guilty of all those statements in the past, he should go beyond that and invite the press and that tell that them "Gentlemen, I made some wrong statements in the past" the same way Sheikh Aminu Dawarawa did. That way, it would bring closure to this scandal and Nigerians would forget.
Going by what we can see, Dr Pantami is doing a good job as a Minister but I have to be fair, because in other climes, by now Pantami would no longer be a Minister."
Dear Nigerians, what is your take on this critical issue of national concern?
