Why Oyinlola May Still Emerge as PDP National Chairman Despite Zoning in favour of the North

It is no longer news that the Peoples Democratic Party Governors has agreed to zone its chairmanship office to the North. The announcement was made by Governor Ifeanyi Uguanyi, Chairman of the National Convention Zoning Committee.

The declaration came as a shock to many observers who had earlier concluded that the office would be zoned to the South so that the North gets the presidency.

However, based upon the latest development, former Oyo State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola who was a leading candidate to emerge as the party chairman, will no longer be eligible for the job.

However, news emanating from the PDP camp indicates that Oyinlola could still fulfil his dream of becoming PDP chairman despite the zoning reality.

How can that happen?

PDP may change its zoning formula if a Northerner emerges as a Presidential candidate

A report in both Vanguard Newspaper and Punch indicates a high likelihood that the party might throw its presidential ticket contest open. This might be in line with the present agitation in a part of the country against zoning. Recall that the Northern Governors Forum recently said it was against the power rotation arrangement.

So, PDP could be throwing the contest open for any politician interested in becoming President regardless of region. However, the outcome of the presidential ticket contest could change the zoning plan of the PDP chairmanship.

If for example, a Northern candidate wins the presidential ticket, the party will be compelled to toy with its zoning plan and reallocate the chairmanship position to a Southerner. But if a southern candidate emerges, the original zoning plan remains intact.

This is done to ensure balance and equity in the allocation of office in the party.

However, the PDP has taken proactive steps to ensure that this does not create another round of crisis by ensuring that all the major stakeholders are properly briefed and agree to it. The implication of this is that the South West still has a chance of getting the chairmanship office at the end of the day.

And if that happens Oyinlola will be the most favoured to clinch the prize.

The reason Oyinlola is favoured above other contestants is that he has strong backing from PDP chieftains including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, PDP ex-governors, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and many others.
