Even though the northern governors have insisted that they wouldn't recognise zoning of the presidency or power, there are two top politicians who can enjoy unprecedented and massive support of the northern elite and northern voters in 2023. The two southern politicians may not even have to negotiate with the northern elite.
When the northern governors met in Kaduna some days ago, they deliberated on so many issues ranging from the Valued Added Tax to the 2023 presidency. They specifically rejected the positions of the southern governors on the two topics. They said southern governors can't intimidate political parties on zoning of tickets.
But the national leader of the All Progressives Congress would be an exception. Even the leader would only have to go to north and present himself and without much rhetoric, the elite would warmly and happily embrace him. Bola Ahmed Tinubu seems to have soread his own hegemony to the extent that he can't be stopped by northern leaders.
Two things have made it clear that northern leaders would embrace Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He is currently in London and the rate at which the northern leaders have trooped out to check him is amazing. Mr. Ganduje has led some top people in Kano State to check Tinubu in London. Even Ganduje hosted the last birthday anniversary colloquium of Bola Tinubu.
The deputy speaker of the House of Representatives has also led some other members of the house from northern caucus to check how Tinubu is fast recovering. Not only that, a top senator, Kashim Shettima, took from his time to visit Tinubu in London.
The second thing is that northern elite can't forget the proactive roles that the former Lagos governor played in the election that brought in Buhari in 2015. Tinubu's help made Buhari's ambition a reality. The northern leaders would pay him back.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan is the second southern politician to enjoy northern support. Just like Tinubu's case, two things would make north support Jonathan if he shows his interest in the top office in the country.
Northern leaders won't deny the fact that in fairness it should be the turn of south to produce president. Definitely, but north wants power. And in order to quickly get it after Buhari's tenure, they will simply back Jonathan, who can't spend above four years in office again. Since Jonathan had already spent five years before he lost the 2015 poll, he can't contest more than once again.
Although Jonathan has remained quiet and he keeps things to himself, he may be convinced to contest again. And northerners would remember how he willingly relinquished power six years ago. He didn't only congratulate president Muhammadu Buhari, but he also ensured a smooth transition of power.
