Mr. Doyin Okupe, a former spokesperson for Goodluck, has taken the bull by its horns. He has declared his ambition to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari. And he wants to use the platform of the People's Democratic Party to actualise his dreams. The former media aide would need to take two key steps in order to pick up the ticket of the party.
Mr. Doyin Okupe has continued to warn the PDP that the party would fail to clinh power in 2023 if it picks anyone from north to run for the party. It is now clear why he insists that the party should zone its ticket to south. However, he still needs to liaise with the northern leaders.
There are two reasons he would need to work with northern governors and leaders. Even though the party may not consider politicians from north, there is no candidate that would emerge without the input of the northern elite. Hence, Mr. Doyin Okupe needs to liaise with them at least for the purpose of the ticket.
He needs to first and foremost work for a participate northerner to emerge as the national chairman of the party. He can't stay neutral in the race for the secretariat of the party located at the Wadata Plaza, Abuja. He may have to consider a former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso for the job. With that, Doyin Okupe would be assured of winning Kano State.
Likewise, he would need to have a strong politician who can be his running mate for the seat of the president. He would make a mistake if he goes for a wrong politician. Mr. Bala Mohammed would be a better choice for him. The Bauchi State governor could shake the All Progressives Congress in the northeastern region.
The second step he needs to take is to look for all possible means to block whatever moves that Mr. Nyesom Wike could make. The Rivers State governor seems to be ambitious and he would want to make his ambition realistic on the PDP platform.
Wike wouldn't be running up and down for the PDP if he didn't have some ambition. His activities became more visible when he worked to ensure removal or dismissal of Mr. Uche Secondus. But Mr. Doyin Okupe should just stop Mr. Wike ahead of the party convention.
Definitely, he can't ask Mr. Wike not to go for the ticket of the party, but the most concrete way that the former spokesperson can use is to campaign against some policies of Wike most especially on the issue of Valued Added Tax which is infuriating the northern elite.
