Two top politicians in the southern region are apparently concerned about how things are moving ahead of the 2023 elections. They have given warnings specifically about the presidential election and it would be better if the country listens to their warning in order to avoid the dangers attached to it. Mr. Rochas Okorocha and Doyin Okupe have expressed their views.
Note that the Northern Elders Forum has categorically stated that northern politicians have rights to contest in 2023 and north has voting strength to emerge in 2023 again once President Muhammadu Buhari has successfully completed his tenure. Even the Coalition of Northern Groups has agreed with the Northern Elders Forum.
Mr. Abdullahi Adamu, a powerful member of the upper chamber of the National Assembly, has even said that zoning formula being championed by southern politicians isn't constitutional. Hence, any interested person can jostle for the seat of the president in 2023. He echoed what most of the top northerners believe.
But the former spokesperson to the president, Mr. Doyin Okupe, has explained that the People's Democratic Party would lose the 2023 presidential election if it picks its candidate from north again. The former spokesperson reacted to the arguments of the northern elite most especially in the PDP.
Doyin Okupe didn't reveal what he had seen for him to conclude that the PDP would pick its candidate from north. But he sternly warned that the political party wouldn't be able to win the highly important election if it goes to the northern region to pick its flag bearer or representative for the election.
Recall that former vice president Atiku Abubakar competed against Mr. Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. The highly competitive election ended in favour of the incumbent president. Now Doyin Okupe has warned that the PDP might lose the election if its candidate is from north.
Mr. Rochas Okorocha, a former governor of Imo State, has also warned that the unity of the country leans on the 2023 presidential election. He also wants the next president to come from south just as the southern governors unanimously demanded the 2023 presidency.
Mr. Okorocha specifically warned that the ruling party would be divided if the party picks its candidate from north. The former governor explained why it is important for APC to consider a southern candidate. He said that the presidency was in south from 1999 to 2007 after which a northerner led the country to 2010. He gave the chronology to the current presidency.
Okorocha is a founding father of the APC. He led some factions of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the formation of the APC. He has now sternly warned the leadership of the party that the APC would divide if a northern candidate is picked for the 2023 presidential election.
