Most among his recent appearance was during the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, where officials except the President, had appeared on their face masks.
Again, on April 10, Buhari was the only person who did not wear his mask during his meeting with members of the Presidential Task Force on control of COVID-19 in Abuja.
Also, in their recent pictures featuring the President and his Vice, while Yemi Osinbajo had his mask on, President Buhari never wore his.
It will be recalled that, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria, the Federal Government earlier mandated the use of face masks or coverings in public.
The National Center for Disease Control, equally advises the use of face masks signifying an additional layer of physical distancing in a bid to help curtail the spread of the respiratory droplets from person to person.
The overall aim is to curb community transmission of COVID-19, as the virus is primarily spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.
The World Health Organization Regional Director for Europe, Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge, on his own, said though the majority of those who are infected with COVID-19 have ‘’a self-limiting infection and do recover,’’ a minority go on to suffer more severe diseases, with 10% of cases requiring intensive care unit admission, noting that ‘’sadly, some patients will pass away’’.
Kluge further warned, ‘’Older people are at a significantly increased risk of severe disease following infection from COVID-19.’’
In Europe, for instance, over 95% of coronavirus related deaths occurred in those older than 60 years, and Buhari is 77 years old.
Mr. President had battled undisclosed illness, for which he travels to UK for medical consultations and many government officials including the then Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, had tested positive and fell to the disease.
In the midst of all these evidences, physicians said it is becoming clearer that the healthier an individual was before the pandemic, plays a crucial role. People who age healthily are less at risk, and Mr. President supposedly fall in this category.
Before one can access somebody at the level of a president, he/she must have been well screened and he is not in the kind of environment that are readily exposed.
The recommendation of the Federal Ministry of Health was that everyone should wear a mask when leaving the home or going to public spaces or gatherings, but people do not wear mask inside sitting room or office and it does not expose one to much risk as long as all other prevention measures are duly observed.
Mr. President is in his office and apparently COVID-19 negative. His visitors must have also done temperature screening, washed their hands, used sanitizers and put on masks.
The visitors also sit meters apart, a practice that reduces the risk of transmission in such room where Mr. President meets with guests.
Masks reduce the amount of infected cough droplets in a symptomatic COVID-19 patient that could get into surfaces or air in the public space. It works with other preventive measures, especially in a public place where the status of people are not known.
