Ondo Community where Bitumen speaks

For several hundreds of years ago, the discovery of Bitumen in any of the Ikale communities could not have meant an asset to the founders of Ikale communities, but the mystery of this resource which would improve a race is as expected in a song poetry.

Bitumen is a common binder used in road construction. It is principally obtained as a residual product in petroleum refineries after higher fractions like gas, petrol, kerosene and diesel, etc., are removed. Bitumen as a black or dark brown non-crystalline soil or viscous material having adhesive properties is derived from petroleum crude either by natural or by refinery processes.

What our Bitumen should be doing in the area of civil engineering works include the constructions of roads, runways and platforms,; Water proofing to prevent water seepage,; Mastic floorings for factories and godowns,; Canal lining to prevent erosion,; Dump-proof courses for masonry,; Tank foundation,;the master key for road, Joint filling material for mason.

On Industries, Ikale community Bitumen could be used to produce electrical cables and junction boxes,; In battery manufacture as sealing compound,; Paint industries for manufacturing black paints and anti corrosive paints,; Ceramics,; Printing inks,; Water proof papers,; Electrical capacitors and Bituminous felts and its plays many more important role in the country at large.

Without knowing that there is a deposit of Bitumen in our communities, some of our communities over five hundred years ago would sing on a continuous drop of water-turn-money. Like in Irele, an ancient poetry reads, “Omi tororo, Omi owo, Omi wa o ni Irele.” The translation of this poetry reads, “A continuous drop of water, water of money, our water in Irele”.
