[Opinion] Why The Anambra 2021 Election Could Become One of The Most Peaceful In Recent Times

It is no longer a secret, that electoral violence is one of the greatest challenges that confronts the conduct of elections in Nigeria. On several occasions, violence has disrupted elections in some parts of the country, with election material often snatched by hoodlums. In some cases, electoral violence has equally claimed the lives of some people. This has seen the political atmosphere in states become tensed each time a state or country is about to have an election.

In what can be argued to be a new dimension to the fear of violence that often accompanies the period leading to election, the 2021 Anambra state governorship election, has seen the fear shift from that of electoral violence involving hoodlums who are loyal to the candidates, to that of a possible clash between armed gangs suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and government security forces.

Recall that for a while now, the gunmen have been carrying out various degrees of attacks and killings in the state, insisting that no election will be held in Anambra as scheduled. This was followed by the outlawed group, issuing a week-long sit-at-home order to residents of the South-East region, in what can be argued to be a deliberate attempt to scuttle the November 6, 2021, Anambra state governorship election.

Despite this, the government has continued to assure the public, that the election will be held as scheduled, maintaining that nothing would stop it from holding. This has undoubtedly created fear in many of the electorates in Anambra, and also raised concern that the election could be marred by a very low turnout of voters. On the other hand, some people have argued that the election could be marred by violence, as government security forces, are likely to clash with gunmen operating in the state.

There is no doubt that the activities of the unknown gunmen pose threats to the November 6, 2021, Anambra state governorship election. However, it is my view that the election could go on to become one of the most peaceful elections in Nigeria in recent times. Recall that the government, has already deployed heavily armed security officers including Army, Police, Civil Defence, etc., to the state to prevent any form of attack by non-state actors.

With this in mind, it can be argued that the heavy presence of security forces in the state, could prevent the IPOB and gunmen operating in the state, from coming out to disrupt the election. At the same time, it could equally prevent hoodlums who are loyal to the candidates, from taking any action that is capable of disrupting the election, or the peace of the area.

With this in mind, it can be argued that the threats ahead of the November 6, 2021, Anambra state governorship election, could eventually pave way for the election to become one of the most peaceful elections to be conducted in Nigeria in recent times.
