OPINION: 1 Lesson Nigerians Should Learn From Obi's Advice To The South-East On The 2023 Presidency

Several topics of debate have been created in regards to the next Nigerian presidential election, which is 18 months away. Arguably, the most talked about topic relating to the 2023 presidential election, is the issue of zoning the 2023 Presidency to a specific region of the country.

One region of the country which has not held back in it's demand for the 2023 Presidency, is the South-East. The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has been and are still spearheading the demand for an Igbo Presidency, reason being that the South-East has never been given the opportunity to produce a Nigerian President, since the introduction of the democratic rule to Nigeria in 1999.[Image Credit: Google]

The official demand for a Southern Presidency by the Southern Governors' Forum (SGF) on the 5th of July, 2021, gave the Ohanaeze Ndigbo a boost in their mission for an Igbo Presidency by 2023, as the Igbo group specifically adviced some Igbo politicians to start preparations for the presidential election in 2023.[Image Credit: Google]

In an exclusive interview with Arise Television on Monday, 9th of August, 2021, a former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi reacted to the call for an Igbo Presidency. Peter Obi acknowledged that the South-East has genuine reasons why they should produce the next President of Nigeria, but the South-East needs to convince other regions to support the quest for an Igbo Presidency.[Image Credit: Google]

Peter Obi, who was the Presidential running mate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019, explained that he spoke of his own accord, but the decision of zoning presidential tickets to the South-East or any other region, is a decision that political parties will make. He also adviced the South-East against using force in it's demand, but should play a politics of consultation and engagement.[Image Credit: Google]

In my opinion, Nigerians of all tribes should learn one important lesson from Peter Obi's comments on the quest for an Igbo Presidency.

1) Nigerians Should Learn That Political Parties Are Within Their Rights To Zone Their Presidential Ticket To Any Region Of The Country

Some Northern groups such as the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) all objected to the Southern Governors' demand for a Southern Presidency. The Northern groups have given reasons why they should produce the successor of President Muhammadu Buhari and some Southerners have done likewise.

Admist the debate on zoning, Nigerians should never forget that only political parties will make the decision of zoning their presidential tickets to a particular region.
