Will APC be able to organise a hitch free national convention like the PDP?

The outcome of the recently concluded national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has continued to receive laudable remarks from prominent party stakeholders and even a member of the opposition. Recall that the Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Salihu Mohammed Lukman, gave credit to PDP leaders for being able to manage the process of the convention unscathed and without any serious accusations.

However, in his own political party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), it has been difficult to organize a convention to elect new leaders for the party, after the Adams Oshiomole-led National Working Committee, was removed from office and replaced with a Caretaker committee led by the Governor of Yobe state, Mai Mala Buni.

Though the Buni-led Committee was given six months to organise a national convention by the APC NEC when they were appointed last year June, the timeline for the convention has however been extended indefinitely after another six months extension last December.

Considering recent political developments in the APC during the Ward, Local Government and State Congresses, will the APC be able to organise a hitch free national convention?

In my opinion, there are two reasons why APC may find it difficult to organise a hitch free national convention like the PDP.

First is the leadership crisis rocking the party in many of the States across the country.

The outcome of the state Congress where report claimed about 90 chairmen were elected has opened a can of worms that might be difficult to deal with before the party holds its convention. Despite the fact that the APC set up appeal committees to deal with the crisis in many states, coupled with the fact that the NEC had previously warned members against taking the party to court; many aggrieved party stakeholders shunned the appeal committees in various states, while some have instituted law suits against the party, a brazen disregard for the directive of the NEC.

Secondly, the challenge of being a ruling party.

I believe one of the reasons why PDP could easily organise its convention is because they are not the ruling party and they have fewer number of Governors and legislators compared to APC. Having these large pool of Governors, Legislators and even Ministers will pose a big challenge to any political party from organising a national convention that is devoid of challenges.
