Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State is facing a major challenge after his defection from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The major challenge is that the immediate Governor of the state, AbdulAziz Yari rejected the Governor as the leader of APC in Zamfara State. Yari’s rejection of Matawalle as the APC leader in the state is contrary to the announcement made public by APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mai Mala Buni.

According to a report by The Punch, Buni who is also the Governor of Yobe State had during the official defection if Matawalle announced that the Governor is now the leader of APC in Zamfara. In view of this, the focus of this is on the two major political losses Yari may suffer for standing against Governor Matawalle on this issue.

First, Yari may lose his hold on his faction.
Some people in Yari’s faction may even want to switch to the camp that is now in charge, that is Matawalle’s camp. This is because the APC National Leadership has already recognized Matawalle’s camp. Now, to make matters worse, a top APC chieftain who joined the party with Matawalle, Dr Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has called for the disbandment of Yari’s faction.

According to a report by Daily Trust, Shinkafi petitioned Buni and the Inspector General of Police, Baba Alkali Usman demanding that Yari’s faction and their offices should be closed down. He further alleged that they are disturbing the peace in Zamfara with their activities which run contrary to what the APC in Zamfara under Matawalle wants to do. If this request is granted, Yari’s faction would be affected and most of his supporters will simply join the ruling camp led by Governor Matawalle.

Second, Yari may lose his bid to become APC National Chairman.
Yari is one of the top men vying for the post of APC National Chairman in the forthcoming convention. Now that Yari has pitched himself against his state Governor by rejecting him as the APC leader in the state, that is a big problem for him. Also, by doing that, Yari has disobeyed Buni who is at the helm of APC for now. This is because it was Buni that declared Matawalle the leader of APC in Zamfara.

If Yari loses the support of his state Governor, the backing of the mainstream APC supporters from Zamfara and the backing of Buni, it may make him to lose the contest. This is because charity begins at home. If Yari loses the backing of his people from his home state, where will he now get the votes to win the election?
