Former Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki needs to urgently attend to a particular crisis within the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in order to avoid the bitter consequences that can arise from the impending bigger crisis.
Bukola Saraki was recently appointed to lead a panel set up with a view of settling all the internal issues in the PDP. He was to work with former governors including Ibrahim Dankwambo, Liyel Imoke, Ibrahim Shema along with two other politicians drawn from southeast and southwest. The panel has already started to work and success is being recorded.
But all is not well with the Anambra State chapter of the PDP. The chapter is having lots of issues concerning its leadership with at least two men claiming to be the state chairman of the party. Whereas there will be a gubernatorial election in the state in November, 2021 and the PDP will look forward to winning the state and take over from the APGA.
Mr. Ejike Oguebego announced that a high court in Abuja declared him as the authentic chairman of the party in the state and he ordered that the planned congresses in the wards and local government areas be put on hold. The congresses were important to elect delegates who would also elect the party's candidate for the election.
Ejike Oguebego argued that there was no validly elected state chairman of the party even though the chapter conducted wards and local council polls to elect leaders in the areas before the PDP national convention in 2018. He therefore urged the court to declare him as the PDP chairman in Anambra State.
But Chief Nwobu, who is currently leading the party in the state, has reacted to the purported judgment got by Mr. Ejike Oguebego. He said that the ruling being flaunted by his rival couldn't stand because there was a substiting judgment obtained in the same Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, that made him the state chairman of the party.
Mr. Ndubuisi Nwobu explained, “I want to tell you that there was another judgment on 24 May 2018, by Justice AO Musa of the FCT high court. That judgement clearly stated the process in which we emerged, and it stated that we fulfilled all the processes, and we were duly elected".
He further called on party members to disregard the latest verdict being spread by Ejike Oguebego. He said that he remained the executive chairman of the PDP in Anambra State. The issue is definitely getting out of hands.
Already sixteen aspirants have shown their intent to have the PDP ticket for the Anambra State election. And the party is supposed to have finalised on arrangements towards the success of the primary election. But now that two chairmen have claimed to be the head of the party, it is imperative for the Saraki-led Committee to act fast with the hope of nipping the crisis in the bud.
