During a webinar organized by the Africa Leadership Group, tagged "Developing a Viable Nation 2", an event which was hosted by Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of Trinity House, El-Rufai was asked why Igbos have not produced the President yet, and he said that he does not think anyone has stopped the South-East from producing the President.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai:
He said that the truth is that you cannot get Presidency of Nigeria by threats or by playing victim, and that this is a political process, and for that to happen, you need to negotiate with other parts of the country and get them to support you.
He said that this is the way things are done. He said that is what former President Goodluck Jonathan did in 2019, and that is what President Muhammadu Buhari did in 2015 and 2019, that is what every President does. And that you cannot just sit down in one corner and abuse everyone in Nigeria and ask to be given the presidency, because that is not going to happen.
He said that presidency is gotten through electoral process and not by allocation. That the way it is done is to join a political party, and your party negotiates with other regions in the country, and it happens. He said that you cannot get it by sitting down or threatening secession.
He said that he thinks the South-East region are going about it the wrong way, because looking at it, their party APC, for instance, does not have much influence in the region.
The subject of Igbo presidency has gotten a lot of momentum in recent times. Some concerned groups and individuals have been saying that the Igbos be given a chance to produce the next President, that Igbo presidency will pacify the tensions that have been rocking the region.
Some days ago, Ohanaeze Ndigbo had said that they will negotiate with other regions for Igbos to be given the chance to produce the next President.
The South-East region has been rocked by secession threats, and many believe that this secession threat could scuttle the chances of Igbos producing President. And that for South-East to win the trust of other regions, they have to deal with the secession threats in the region.
El-Rufai said that he does not think anyone has stopped Igbos from going for the Presidency, but stressed that Presidency is not gotten by threats or playing victim.
