Why Power Rotation To South May Result In APC's Downfall As Northern Voters May Support PDP in 2023

There are serious worries in the camp of the All Progressives Congress, as the 2023 general election draws near. The ruling party has been compelled by the power rotation formula it adopted in 2013 to zone its presidential ticket to the South.

So politicians from the North are barred from the party’s primaries. Only southern politicians are permitted to vie for APC's presidential ticket.

Three southern politicians are considered frontline candidates in the race for the party's presidential ticket, they are former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi.

However, recent indication strongly suggests that this decision might backfire on the party during the 2023 presidential election. This article will highlight one major reason why power rotation to the south might result in APC's downfall in the 2023 presidential election, based on the revelation of a Northern Governor.

The Northern APC members may vote for PDP’s Northern candidate in the 2023 presidential election

This is a major revelation that was made to Vanguard Newspaper by a PDP Governor from the North East who stressed that many Northern APC members will switch camp to PDP which is likely to field a Northern Muslim as its presidential candidate in 2023.

The Governor whose identity was not revealed by the newspaper revealed that this sentiment is one of the motivations behind PDP's decision to dismiss its former zoning formula and adopt a new one that favours the North.

This is likely going to be a major setback on APC because the North has been its stronghold since 2015. The party was able to triumph over PDP because of strong voting numbers from the Northern region. Without votes from the region, it will be almost impossible for APC to emerge victorious over PDP in 2023 because PDP is strong in the South.

Interestingly, even APC chieftains are aware of this dilemma. Osita Ikechukwu, Director General of Voice of Nigeria expressed the fears during a recent interview with the media.

One of the ways by which APC can attempt to rescue the situation is by appointing a strong Northern Muslim as running mate, but analysts have said that even this might not be enough to assuage the Northern voters.

Meanwhile, the PDP is expected to announce its distribution formulae for the office of the National Working Committee. And this will set the stage for the party to announce its zoning of the presidency to the North.
