The People's Democratic Party has slated October for its convention to choose its national chairman following the initial suspension and subsequent removal of Uche Secondus. The party would elect a Chairman and there would be two crises that would follow the exercise almost immediately. The two crises may even further divide the party and force some leaders to leave.
The first crisis that would apparently start is that of the 2023 presidential ticket. The struggle for the coveted ticket has steamed up and almost all the interested politicians are struggling to win the ticket for the race.
The northern leaders would want to slug it out with their colleagues jn the southern part. There would be more convincing reasons for the northern politicians to contest for the ticket. The PDP has zoned its national chairmanship to the southwest region and that means the north would take the presidential ticket.
The Oyo State chapter of the PDP has argued that politicians from southern region would still compete for the office of the president even though the political party has zoned its national chairmanship to southwest. But the northern leaders won't fold their arms while the south takes the two key slots.
The second crisis would be at the southwest region. Of course, Mr. Ayodele Fayose may be the preferred candidate for the job at the Wadata Plaza. But Fayose has always been controversial and it will all start at the southwest region that would produce the next national chairman for the opposition party.
The former Ekiti State governor would use the new office that be would get to gain more control of the political party in the region. Mr. Ayodele Fayose and Seyi Makinde aren't in any good term. The two men have been running on different ways and they don't seem to agree on the issue of leadership.
Mr. Makinde supported Taofeek Arapaja in the last PDP congress in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. Whereas Mr. Ayodele Fayose threw his weight behind Eddy Olafeso. It was a fierce battle, but eventually Makinde was able to push the candidacy of Arapaja through.
Mr. Fayose still considers himself superior to Mr. Makinde. He even launched some verbal attacks on Makinde few months to the congress held in Osogbo. There is a possibility that Fayose would want to use the opportunity of being the national chairman to lord over the southwest chapter of the PDP.
