Opinion: Why The Defection Of Anambra Dep Gov To APC May Affect APGA In The Gov'ship Election

It is no longer news that Anambra State Deputy Governor, Nkem Okeke is no longer a chieftain of the All Progressive Grand Alliance.

The vibrant politician who is now a member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) was warmly welcomed to the party yesterday by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Nkem Okeke was presented to Mr. President in Abuja by the All Progressives Congress Caretaker Committee Chairman and Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, and Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.

Members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Anambra have frowned at the latest developments. According to the Anambra State Commissioner of information, Mr. Adinuba, he stated that the defection is unconstitutional.

Will the detection of the deputy Governor from APGA to APC affect the chances of APGA in next month gubernatorial poll?

The defection of Dr. Nkem Okeke will certainly affect the chances of the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Professor Charles Soludo in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra state.

Nkem Okeke is one of the most respected and revered politicians in the state with a wide range of followers.

He has served the state as Commissioner for Economic Planning and again, as Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Transport during the administration of Governor Peter Obi so he has what it takes to mobilize massively for the candidate of his new party, Senator Andy Uba.

Also, Nkem Okeke hails from Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State. The local Government comprises towns with a high population. His people from the local government may want to support him by voting for the candidate of his new party.

All this will amount to a reduction in the votes that could have gone to the candidates of APGA had Nkem Okeke not defects to APC.

In a nutshell, the defection of the Deputy Governor of Anambra State from APGA to APC will affect the chances of APGA winning next month election.
