Nigerians can remember that Northern Governor Forum rejected zoning by kicking against rotational President ahead of 2023 presidential election.

That issue has been generating controversy. It would be recalled that Southern Governors had demanded that the South must produce the next President of Nigeria in 2023 after the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari. But, the decision of the Northern Governors who rejected power rotation as put forward by Southern Governors is now raising concerns. At last, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has reacted to the issue. Wike disclosed two things that may make Nigerians including Northern Governors to back zoning.

First, zoning will bring peace to Nigeria as a country. This is the argument of the people who back zoning. Wike also revealed that zoning will improve peace in the country. In view of the ethnic, religious, tribal and other sentiments in Nigeria, zoning comes in handy to give every part of the country the sense of belonging. It also helps to reduce the fear of domination which some people struggle with.

Already, there have been many agitations for secession in some parts of the country especially the Southern part. All these agitations have affected the peace in Nigeria. This will be contained if the zoning is respected and power returned to the South in 2023. Some Northerner politicians such as Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Abubakar Shekarau (Former Governor Kano State), Kashim Shettima (Former Governor of Borno State) among many others have said this while supporting power shift to the South in 2023.

Moreover, Wike disclosed that zoning will promote equity and fairness in Nigeria. What does equity mean? It means treating equals equally. It also means being impartial and fair in treating all parties or groups concerned. In that case, it is argued by the supporters of zoning that even if zoning is not constitutional, it has been practiced and respected over the years by different parties in Nigeria. Why? It is simply because it promotes equity. It work for Nigeria as a country and still works in many states in the country with regards to their governorship posts.

This is another argument Wike put forward that should make Norther Governors and those against zoning to have a change of mind if they really want peace to reign in Nigeria. He made it clear that zoning will prevent crisis in the country and strengthen the peace in the country. Most states in Nigeria such as Anambra State, Enugu State, Nasarawa State among many others rotate their governorship seats in the spirit of zoning. For example in Enugu: Former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani was from Enugu East, immediate past Governor Sullivan Chime was from Enugu West while current Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is from Enugu North. This zoning has been working in Enugu and many other states for peace to reign. Zoning has always worked for Nigeria as power rotates between South and North.
