David Hale, the US Assistant Secretary of State, confirmed after his visit to Lebanon that Washington would not "provide long-term assistance to Lebanon until after ensuring the fight against corruption and transparency." And he considered that "Hezbollah is part of the corrupt clique in Lebanon."
He indicated that his country aspires to a government that meets the people's demands, adding, "We do not tell the Lebanese how to choose their government." He added, "We want to create an international mechanism to support reform in Lebanon. We want an end to financial corruption in Lebanon."
Hill added, "We want real economic reforms," pointing to the provision of $ 18 million in aid to Lebanon. He explained that the US aid included aid to the Lebanese army and non-governmental organizations.
On the Beirut explosion, Hill said, "We are awaiting the results of the investigation into the port explosion."
And David Hale, during his visit to Beirut, had expressed the US administration's readiness to "support a Lebanese government that works for real change in the country."
Hill said, "We cannot accept empty promises anymore ... Washington is ready to support a government that makes real change and responds to people."
Hill’s statements came after his meeting with the Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi.
Hill also met former Prime Minister Saad Hariri at the "Center House", and the meeting covered the latest developments, the general situation and the repercussions of the catastrophic explosion in Beirut port last week.
