PDP Elects Two Different Governorship Candidates in Anambra

A new development is brewing in Anambra over the recent primary election conducted by the state's chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This is as a result of the nomination of two candidates who were elected in a parallel primary held at different locations in the state, PM News reports .

At the St Paul’s Primary and Secondary School Awka,Ugochukwu Uba emerged winner of the exercise pulling 275 votes to beat Godwin Ezeemo who 114 votes.

The Cable added that Mr Valentine Ozigbo, former CEO Transcorp PLC also emerged winner. Ozigbo secured 62 votes to emerge as the flagbearer of the party for the November 6 governorship election in the state, .

Tony Nwoye, a governorship aspirant of PDP, has dropped his bid to contest for the party’s ticket in the coming governorship election in Anambra state.

Nwonye announced his withdrawal shortly before the PDP primary election began on Saturday, June 26, on the grounds of disenfranchisement of over 94 percent of delegates.

Nwonye explained that the reason for stepping down from the race was due to recent developments in the PDP within the last 36 hours which should be of grave concern to every true democrat.

While instructing his supporters to vote for any aspirant of their choice, he enjoins them to understand this painful decision which he believes is the right course of action at this time.

Meanwhile, the crisis rocking the Anambra chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) on Thursday, June 24, took another twist over the emergence of Charles Soludo as the party's candidate.

PM News reports that a contender in the APGA's governorship primary held in Awka on Wednesday, June 23, Okwudili Ezenwankwo, has rejected the outcome of the election.

It was gathered that Soludo, who was the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), defeated other contenders to clinch the party's ticket.

According to the report, Ezenwankwo, who represents Orumba North/Orumba South federal constituency in the National Assembly, said the primary was marred by irregularities and intimidation.

Daily Trust also reports that for violating the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, the APGA has been ruled out of the November 6, 2021 governorship poll in Anambra state.

INEC disclosed that APGA did not notify it when it purportedly held its ad hoc congress to elect delegates for the party’s governorship primary.

In the same vein, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chris Ngige, has advised the party to postpone its governorship primaries in Anambra state .

According to The Cables, Ngige, who is also the minister of labour and employment, in a press statement expressed misgivings over the poll scheduled to take place Saturday, June 26.

In line with his media aide, the minister stated that the election should be moved to Tuesday, June 29.

The minister said there was no sign of the governorship primary taking place in the state.

Ngige told Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state, who is the chairman of the committee organising the primary, that shifting the poll would enable party members across the state to participate, Vanguard reported.
